I have recently contracted Shaun Rowland to carry out extensive work on our house at our home - a 19th century building of around 3,800 sq.ft, which required varying degrees of work. The larger structural work included knocking rooms together, demolishing load-bearing walls, installing steel supports, a new roof, extending and renovating an uninhabitable coach-house into a 2-bedroom annexe. The whole property also required rewiring, re-plumbing, re-plastering, re-decorating, re-pointing. In fact any type of 're'-doing of anything; it had to be done!
Shaun Rowland was recommended to me by the residential designer who did our plans, having been very satisfied with work that Shaun did at his own house. It turned out to be the best recommendation anyone has ever given me. He listened carefully to all my requests, very quickly understood exactly what I wanted, and was very astute at managing my expectations - discussing different options for things, explaining what could and couldn't be done, giving me all the information I needed to make informed decisions and changes as and when necessary. He was also very efficient to deal with - if I mentioned something in person, he would follow it up in writing. He hardly forgot a single thing - most of the time it would be the other way round, and he would be waiting on me for things. And if he did make an error, which was extremely rare, he would hold his hands up, admit it, and get on with the job in hand. His honesty and transparency were refreshing. In addition to the actual work, and any personal interaction, all administration matters and paperwork, including quotes and invoicing, were done very efficiently. I felt completely confident in his abilities, and needed to be able to fully trust him especially as I was to be working abroad for 5 out of the 9 months of the works period.
From start to finish, Shaun was outstanding in every aspect of his work, and went above and beyond not only my expectations, but also his responsibilities as a builder. No request was too big or too small for Shaun, whether within his remit or outside it. He would just get on with anything that came along - whether it was arranging a new water supply from Thames Water; reconditioning the Aga, getting trees cut down, recommending curtain and carpet suppliers, instructing me on terracotta maintenance, aerial installation, ordering a tank of oil so that it was all ready when I moved back from abroad, electric gate recommendations etc. When Shaun says: “I know just the person to do that”, you can be sure that the person he knows is going to be the very best at their profession. Not only does Shaun have high standards for himself, but that goes for everybody who he employs, whether directly or indirectly.
The quality of the building work from Shaun and his core team is exceptional - and this isn't just my opinion. At every stage of this project, I have had comments left, right and centre. When our kitchen designer visited the property in the early stages, he stepped over some floorboards in the hall that were open, exposing the newly-laid pipes beneath. He pointed at them, and said that the pipework was so tidy and professional that I must be using Shaun and his guys. Our phone and data installation company also referred to top quality of Shaun's work and in particular the electrical work that his guys do. Close to completion, one of my family members who has done a number of property renovations, commented that the finish and the paintwork was outstanding. A friend of mine who is a surveyor was astounded by the quality of the exterior stonework - both the new-build sections and the faultless repointing.
I would therefore have no hesitation in recommending Shaun Rowland Building Contractors to anyone, and in fact it would be foolish to choose anyone else!
